I have wasted several hours on this; unable to get Thunderbird set up to
connect to the mail server. I can ping the mail server so the mail
server is up and running. What are the default ports that Virtualmin
uses for the Dovecot IMAP/POP server? When Thunderbird does its test it
comes back unable to connect. What is the standard configuration when
setting up Virtualmin?

Unless you're deliberately running a nonstandard setup, it should be
listening on one or more of ports 110 (POP3), 143 (IMAP), 993 (IMAPS),
and 995 (POP3S).

I can ping the mail server so the mail server is up and running.
Mail servers rarely using an ICMP protocol, so ping is not an indication.

I doubt it is a question of ports (though you could always check logs), did you check firewall?
Did you try to connect to mail server locally?

While this is beyond the scope of the Webmin list.

Thunderbird also relies on you having the correct protocol to test the
connection, ie normal password, encrypted password. I've encountered
this before also.

You should first use a Konsole and determine that the mail server is
responding. If that works use the standard ports 25 and 587 if memory
serves. If you setup the server you should also know what protocols you
are using whether it's normal password or encrypted.
